The Benagil sea cave is the most photographed spot on the Algarve coast, and one of the best ways to see it is on a private boat from Albufeira Marina. You leave from the marina with your own skipper and head west along a coastline of golden cliffs, rock arches and small beaches that can only be reached from the water.

The route

On the way to Benagil your skipper will slow down at the most beautiful parts of the coast, such as the cliffs around Praia da Marinha, so you can take photos and swim. Because the boat is private, you decide how long to stay at each stop.

Visiting the cave

Access inside the Benagil cave is restricted by the maritime authorities, so your skipper will take you to the entrance for the classic view and photos. The coves and grottos around it are just as impressive and much quieter.

When to go

Mornings are usually calmer, with clearer water and fewer boats. In summer, book a few days ahead to secure your preferred time.

What to bring

• Swimwear, a towel and sun cream
